What this tool does

It helps you write a clear, polite letter to your child's school asking them to look into your child's speech or language difficulties, either by arranging an assessment or putting extra support in place.

Writing to a school about special educational needs can feel daunting, especially if you are not sure what to ask for or which rules apply. This tool does the drafting for you, so you end up with something you can read through, tweak, and send.

When to use it

It is aimed at parents and carers of school-age children in the UK who have noticed that speech or language problems are holding their child back at school. That might be unclear speech that other children struggle to understand, a stammer, difficulty following instructions, trouble putting sentences together, or a diagnosed condition like developmental language disorder.

You might use it if the school has not yet picked up on the problem, if progress has stalled, or if you have raised concerns verbally and want something in writing to move things forward. It also works well if your child already sees a speech and language therapist and you want the school to match that support in the classroom.

How it works

You answer a short set of questions about your child, the difficulties you have noticed, how these are affecting school life, and any assessments or reports that already exist. The tool then produces a letter you can copy, edit, and send to the SENCO or headteacher. The letter refers to the SEND Code of Practice so the school understands the context of your request. Nothing you enter is saved once you leave the page, and the letter is written in plain English so you can change anything that does not quite fit your situation. If you are unsure what to put in a question, you can skip it or add your own wording, and the letter will still read naturally.
